Tom Burgess

Tom Burgess has more than 20 years of experience providing psychotherapy. He is a Licensed Professional Counselor and has worked in inpatient, residential, and outpatient settings.

Tom is intensively trained in Dialectical Behavior Therapy. He started the DBT adolescent program while at Henrico Area Mental Health and Developmental Services, and started, developed, and coordinated the adolescent and adult DBT program at another private practice before opening Discovery Counseling & Consulting. He enjoys working with teens and adults who have intense emotions which lead to self-destructive behavior.

Tom has extensive experience working with children, adolescents and their families addressing ADHD, Oppositional-Defiant problems, depression, anxiety, and other problems. He has extensive experience helping children and teens develop more effective ways of managing problems. He also has an extensive background in helping teens and their families manage the transition from childhood to the teenage years, a time where the old way of discussing problems and finding solutions just doesn’t work anymore.

“One of the things I enjoy the most is working with people to learn to effectively manage their emotions, solve problems effectively, and develop a life that means something to that person.”
